LP2985AIBP-3.3 is a voltage regulator which belongs to the linear category within PMIC (power management integrated circuit ). It is designed to convert single ended input voltage sources into a single ended output voltage product, providing a steady supply to the load. As such, this voltage regulator is used in numerous applications which require a higher level of accuracy, feed rate and integrated protection for the load.
This regulator is constructed with a low dropout (LDO) voltage regulator topology, which delivers stability and improved performance even when it experiences extreme temperature variations. It provides a wide input voltage range of 0.8V to 6V and output voltage range of 1.2 to 3.3V. The device is ideal for battery operated systems, due to its low quiescent current (nearly 2mA).
LP2985AIBP-3.3 offers a wide range of benefits and features, such as 780mV dropout voltage, tight output voltage accuracy up to ±1%, up to 1.2A output current, 1µA sleep current, programmable maximum duty cycle, adjustable thermal shutdown protection, as well as easy shutdown control.
The working of the LP2985AIBP-3.3 is based on a basic feedback and control circuit. The regulator consists of four elements – an error amplifier, voltage reference, pass transistor and control logic. The error amplifier is fed with the reference voltage input, and then compared with the external feedback signal (voltage output from the device).
When the voltage output is lower than the reference voltage input, the error signal is sent to the control logic which sends a signal to the pass transistor. This signal turns on the pass transistor or increases its duty cycle, and increases the gate voltage of the pass transistor, thereby allowing the load current to flow and the output voltage is restored to its rated value.
Conversely, when the voltage output is higher than the reference voltage input, the error amplifier sends the error signal to the control logic, resulting in the decrease of duty cycle of the pass transistor. This reduces the gate voltage of the pass transistor, thereby decreasing the load current and the output voltage is restored to its rated value.
