LP3905SDX-30/NOPB Application Field and Working Principle
LP3905SDX-30/NOPB is a specialized power management integrated circuit (PMIC) from Texas Instruments. Designed for the energy-efficient, battery-powered applications, it integrates advanced features for efficient power conversion and innovative power saving modes for current monitoring, system wakeup and supervising gap-filling battery charge. It combines a step-down converter with a regulator, one parallel FET, one N-channel FET, one controlled current path and four low-dropout (LDO) regulators in a 16-lead Wide-body (3.3x3.3 mm) package.
The processor supports a battery-powered solution that combines two main functions: power conversion and system power supervision. The power conversion function is provided by a 200 mA step-down converter, while the other four LDOs provide regulated outputs ranging from 1.5 V up to 3.3 V. The regulator is designed to utilize switching mode operation with a controlled current path and low drop-out voltage.
The power supervision feature is designed to enable uninterrupted microcontroller operations by extending system running times and reduce cost and space with an integrated supervisory circuit. It provides a quick wake-up feature by applying automatic wake-up time optimization for various parts of the system depending on battery capacity. The controller also allows for gap-filling charge of batteries in battery-running applications. This ensures that the system can always resume from any battery run-time without the need for extra maintenance.
The step-down converter uses a FET and an integrated controlled current path with low RDS(ON). It supports up to 600 mA of continuous output current and up to 200 mA at an output voltage of 1.8V. The design also ensures fast load transient response (2µs load transient) for various system loads and for battery recharge. Moreover, the converter is capable of independently powering up to 9 different devices.
The device also features an adaptive power saving mode. This mode is designed to save energy by selectively disabling the regulated outputs based on current load. In addition, it features programmable under-voltage lockout, soft-start and adjustable switching frequency, and adjustable power saving mode operation current level. With the integrated energy-saving features, the device is capable of extending system run time and reducing the total battery power needs.
The LP3905SDX-30/NOPB is an ideal PMIC solution for lithium-ion and other battery-powered applications such as mobile phones, tablets and IoT applications. It provides a complete power supply management solution including LDO regulators, step-down converter, power saving modes and power supervision. With its integrated features, it is capable of providing efficient and reliable operation, improved system wake up times and extended battery life.
