Texas Instruments LP3943ISQX/NOPB devices are dedicated to power management, being part of a broad field known as PMIC – Power Management IC. LP3943ISQX/NOPB help providing assist circuits for LED drivers, being a chance to designers to enhance their end applications, by providing good efficiency and flexibility features.
LED (Light Emitting Diode) drivers are devices or integrated circuits capable of providing constant current to LED elements, as well as its protection against over-temperature, current limit protection and even automatic shutdown, depending on over-voltage and over-current fault conditions.
The LP3943ISQX/NOPB is perfect to design these drivers as it has ESD protection, support for a dimming block/current mode constant current driver, fault status flag and a shutdown/trigger block. Its Pin Assignments configuration is designed to protect LEDs against inversion and offers features for automatic power switching for different LEDs. It also offers up to 93.4 % efficiency at 12 mA of current with a 3 V DC supply.
In terms of working principles, the main idea of a driver is to provide a constant current to its LEDs while protecting them from different fault conditions. This is achieved thanks to the LP3943ISQX/NOPB’s protection against over-temperature, current limit protection, over-voltage and over-current fault conditioners.
In order to do this, the initial phase is to generate a voltage reference. This is achieved using an on-board bandgap circuit with good accuracy and low temperature drift providing a voltage reference for the analog circuit.
The LP3943ISQX/NOPB has a dimming block/current mode constant current driver. This is a dedicated op-amp, with a transistor and a voltage divider circuit. This block is designed to provide the current reference. When working in current-mode, the DC voltage presented to the op-amp is kept constant and by doing so, the current is fixed and always constant.
Finally, there is a fault status flag, that is an LED checker, allowing the device to detect any LED’s opens and shorts, as well as inactive LEDs. This is how the LP3943ISQX/NOPB is capable of protecting thermal, current and voltage faults.
In summary, the LP3943ISQX/NOPB is a high-performance PMIC dedicated to LED Drivers, being able to work up to 93.4 % efficiency, with advantages such as ESD protection, dimming block/current mode constant current driver, fault status flag and a shutdown/trigger block protection. Its working principle includes generating voltage reference with a bandgap control, a dedicated op-amp to provide the current reference and finally a LED checker to protect from faults.
