The LP8754EVM is an evaluation module in the area of off-line, DC/DC and AC/DC SMPS (Switched Mode Power Supply) and is designed to assist the evaluation of the Texas Instruments LP8754 LED driver. By providing up to 75W of output power the LP8754EVM is able to support various commercial LED lighting applications. The LP8754 is a high efficiency, high frequency, 2.25MHz to 4Mhz boost converter offering multiple dimming control interfaces, for application in solid state lighting.

The EVM has a printed circuit board (PCB) with multiple components such as a power MOSFET, EMI filters, inductors, capacitors, resistors and control circuitry. These components support the evaluation of the LP8754 LED driver. The design of the EVM has consideration for an industry standard LED Light module which can be connected to the PCB for evaluation of the LED output power, efficiency, PH15 inrush current and LED current step response.

The LP8754EVM is working by using a feedback loop, with a compensation network, to regulate the output voltage. The output voltage of the driver is monitored by an internal resistor divider, voltage feedback sense Pin (FB). The electrical signals generated at the FB pin are compared with a reference voltage at the comparator block of the LP8754 controlling the internal power MOSFET and thus regulating the output voltage.

The LP8754EVM operates in DCM (Discontinuous Conduction Mode) for better efficiency while achieving a wide range of dimming from 1% to 100%. The configurable frequency selection and the wide range (2.25 MHz to 4 MHz) helps minimize its size and need for external components. Lastly, with 250mA and 750mA current source options, the LP8754EVM can be used in configurations of up to 4 LEDs in series or multiple LED strings.

For further evaluation the EVM offers an UART or I2C interface on the board. This allows for implementation of the LP8754 device’s various features. All parameters such as LED current, switching frequency, PWM dimming, burst mode, and fault monitoring, can thus be adjusted in order to customize the PSU for various application.

The LP8754EVM application field ranges from LED bulb lighting, LED tube lighting, street lighting, decorative lighting, automotive lighting, LCD backlighting and spot lighting applications. As the LP8754EVM is designed to achieve up to 75 W output power, this is particularly suited for high power LED applications.
