The LT1009IPW is a precision voltage reference and regulator. It is ideal for applications such as accurate power supply regulation, sample and hold applications and laser biasing.
The LT1009IPW combines high precision and low drift with excellent temperature stability and low temperature coefficient. It has a very low operating temperature range of –40°C to +85°C.
In terms of operation, the LT1009IPW is a 3-terminal, low dropout, precision voltage regulator. It is built with a combination of an on-chip voltage reference and PMOS pass transistor to supply an output voltage of 1.23V to 5.0V. Cascading several devices in series allows designers to produce output voltage levels up to 15 volts.
The LT1009IPW utilises Bandgap technology which ensures excellent line and load regulation with a low output impedance. This means that the device will remain in a stable state even with dynamically changing loads. In addition, it has an exceptionally low quiescent current of only 100μA, making it an ideal fit for battery-powered devices.
The output can be trimmed using a single resistor and the device is capable of delivering up to 10mA of output current. It is also protected against short-circuit, over-temperature conditions and under-voltage lockout.
The LT1009IPW operates from a minimum input voltage of 3V with a maximum operating voltage range of 28V. Typical applications for the LT1009IPW include voltage references for DACs, ADC components, optical data transmission and audio amplifiers.
Voltage Reference
In its most basic form, a voltage reference is a circuit that provides a reference voltage, regardless of the power supply or load conditions. The reference usually uses a precision transistor, zener diode, or band-gap voltage reference integrated circuit (IC), which regulates the output voltage to a fixed voltage. The voltage references like LT1009IPW are commonly used in power supplies and constant current sources.
In a voltage reference circuit, the reference voltage is usually generated by a bandgap reference, which is an IC consisting of transistors, resistors, diodes and other components.The bandgap reference is a temperature-compensated circuit that ensures a stable output voltage. It uses two transistors working in opposite direction to generate a small voltage with low temperature coefficients. This voltage is then compared with a reference voltage and amplified by an operational amplifier.
The reference voltage is then adjusted with the help of other components to reach the desired value. The output from the bandgap reference is then regulated with low dropout or LDO regulators to ensure a constant output voltage and current.
