The primary stage of the LT230C arrester consists of a spark gap, which is a device that can detect and instantly short out high voltage transients. Together, these two varistors act as a dynamic clamp that can absorb and release the energy of the spark discharge.

The metal oxide varistor (MOV) is the first component to interact with the discharged energy from the spark gap. It absorbs the majority of the energy, while the zinc oxide varistor (ZOV) is the second component that absorbs the rest of the energy. The energy stored in the MOV and ZOV is then released back to the ground in the form of a current, where it can be safely dissipated.
