Gas Discharge Tube Arresters (GDT) are an important protection device used in high voltage systems as an overvoltage protection. They function by limiting the impulse voltage that can be applied to sensitive electronic equipment or components by collecting and discharging an amount of energy that is equal to or greater than the impulse voltage.

The LT230C is a gas discharge tube arrester designed by SAE Automation. It is a two-stage arrester made of a primary and secondary stage enclosed in a metallic can. It combines a spark gap, a zinc oxide varistor, and a metal oxide varistor into one unit. It is designed to provide surge protection for medium to high voltage systems from overvoltage, transients, and lightning. It is also designed to meet the most stringent industry standards for safety and performance.

The primary stage of the LT230C arrester consists of a spark gap, which is a device that can detect and instantly short out high voltage transients. When the spark gap detects a high voltage transient, it sparks across the gap, creating a spark discharge. The spark discharge is released into the secondary stage, which is composed of a zinc oxide varistor and a metal oxide varistor. Together, these two varistors act as a dynamic clamp that can absorb and release the energy of the spark discharge.

The metal oxide varistor (MOV) is the first component to interact with the discharged energy from the spark gap. It absorbs the majority of the energy, while the zinc oxide varistor (ZOV) is the second component that absorbs the rest of the energy. The energy stored in the MOV and ZOV is then released back to the ground in the form of a current, where it can be safely dissipated.

The LT230C arrester is designed to remain stable up to 4500V, and it is capable of withstanding multiple discharges of high energy with no deterioration in performance. This makes the LT230C an ideal choice for surge protection of applications that require a high degree of reliability. It can also be used in applications where safety and reliability can be compromised if overvoltage protection is not provided. It is also RoHS compliant.
