LT3015EDD-15#PBF Application Field and Working Principle
LT3015EDD-15#PBF (Polygate Bi-FET(r) Low Dropout Positive Linear Regulators) devices are advanced Voltage Regulators, considered within the PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuits) Family which is used in various applications. LT3015EDD-15#PBF are a versatile family of low dropout (LDO) linear regulators that are suitable for positive voltage applications. They are relatively simple and require no loop compensation, thereby making them ideal for space-constrained designs.
Application Field
LT3015EDD-15#PBF are ideal for low power applications. Their low power consumption results from the internally fabricated 0.2Ω output transistor which provides an output current of 6A, and the power-on reset circuit with a reverse blocking voltage of 400mV. Due to their ultra-low dropout voltage and low maximum temperatures of 155°C, the LT3015EDD-15#PBF are suitable for consumer, commercial and industrial applications.

Working Principle
The LT3015EDD-15#PBF possesses an internal error amplifier. This amplifier is designed to achieve a 0.1V output voltage, that is adjustable higher or lower by applying an external reference voltage. The external reference voltage sets the voltage at the output of the error amplifier and this voltage then passes the voltage on to the output stage. The internal feedback loop amplifies the output voltage and the resistance of the internal elements determines the output current.
The internal NPN pass device is used to regulate the current between the output voltage and the error amplifier. This pass device is fabricated with a small ground voltage and works with the output stage to set the output voltage. The pass device then acts as an open switch to ensure that an excessive voltage does not cause an over regulation. The output resistance of the pass device is kept at a low level to ensure a high level of rapid current change.
The LT3015EDD-15#PBF also includes an over voltage and thermal foldback feature, that prevents the device from being damaged. Over voltage protection prevents the voltage level from overshooting above the desired levels and the thermal foldback feature prevents the device from operating at a temperature greater than the specified temperature. In addition, the LT3015EDD-15#PBF also includes a soft-start functionality, which provides a slow and smooth start of the output voltage.
