Working Principle

The LT3015ET-2.5#PBF operates as a low-impedance pass device. The main function of the pass device is to maintain the input voltage (VIN) while providing a constant output voltage (VOUT) independent of load current. The current regulation is done by using a shunt regulator. The regulator compares the voltage at the output terminal to a reference voltage. If the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage, the current source also known as the error amplifier turns on, and the excess current is diverted through the shunt device, thereby reducing the output current. The output voltage is adjusted by varying the output current. The current through the resistor and the output capacitor is equal to the difference between the output voltage and the reference voltage. Thus the output voltage can be adjusted by setting the output current.

On the other hand, the LT3015ET-2.5#PBF also uses high speed power transistors to deliver the output current used to maintain the output voltage. It also uses a feed-forward compensation technique which is a series of current sources that accurately set the VOUT during transients.
