The LT3020EMS8-1.5#PBF is a low dropout (LDO) linear voltage regulator that provides a well-regulated output voltage in the range of 1.20 V to 5.5 V with a very low dropout voltage of 145 mV at full load. It employs internal MOSFET pass elements and is characterized by very low noise and low current consumption. It has an operating temperature range of -40 to +125 C.

The LT3020EMS8-1.5#PBF includes a wide input voltage range (2.2V to 28V), short circuit current protection and can deliver up to 1.5A of continuous output current. Furthermore, it has an adjustable output voltage that is set by an external resistor divider and trimmed for accuracy by an external resistor. The device is available in a compact 8-pin DFN package.

Application Field

The LT3020EMS8-1.5#PBF is an ideal solution for low dropout applications that require a well-regulated output voltage, such as post-regulation in switched-mode power supplies. It is suited for battery-operated applications because of its low current consumption and low quiescent power of 800µA. It is also suitable for applications such as PCMCIA cards, notebook computers, digital cameras, or any other application where low output noise, low dropout voltage and small footprint are important.

Working Principle

The LT3020EMS8-1.5#PBF uses a standard adjustable linear regulator circuit to provide a regulated output voltage. With an input voltage higher than the output, the internal MOSFET pass element, resistors and capacitors of the regulator form an amplifier and an output voltage feedback loop. The regulator ensures that the output voltage is held at the preset value by maintaining the voltage drop across the pass element at a constant level. If the output voltage is higher than the set value, the feedback loop decreases the voltage of the pass element gate, thus reducing the current. On the other hand, if the output voltage is too low, the feedback loop increases the voltage on the gate, thus increasing the current.

In addition to the feedback loop, there are also two other components that help regulate the output voltage: an error amplifier and a P-channel MOSFET output driver. The error amplifier compares the output voltage to the internal reference voltage and adjusts the gate voltage accordingly. The output driver is then responsible for driving the pass element’s gate and regulating the current through it.

In order to maintain a constant output voltage, the LT3020EMS8-1.5#PBF also incorporates several additional features. A disable pin is provided to allow users to control the operation of the regulator. An enable pin allows for power saving in applications with low load currents. Finally, the device has an included over-current protection function, which reduces the load current when it exceeds the safe operating level.
