The LT3508EFE#TRPBF is a synchronous step-down dual-channel DC/DC switching regulator that provides ultra-low quiescent current and high integration at a high-efficiency 5MHz switching frequency. It provides two identical channels with up to 2A each output current, suitable for high-current, low-voltage conversion. This DC/DC switching regulator can be used for a variety of power management applications, including automotive, portable electronics, industrial and communications.

Working Principle

The LT3508EFE#TRPBF DC/DC switching regulator has two identical channels that operate in a synchronous Buck topology. It utilizes a Power Stage Controller (PSC) to drive a high-side power MOSFET and a low-side power MOSFET in a synchronous Buck converter. The two power MOSFETs form a half-bridge configuration, in which the gate of the high-side power MOSFET is driven by the PSC providing the maximum low-side current. The output of the regulator is set by an external resistor network and provides a programmable output voltage.

The regulator is controlled by a regulated constant on-time control scheme. This control scheme utilizes the ILIM pin to monitor the current flowing through the low-side power MOSFET and sets a reference voltage, which in turn sets the operating frequency and regulates the output voltage. The operating frequency is set by an external resistor and is adjustable from 250kHz up to 5MHz.

In shutdown mode, the PSC is disabled and the power MOSFETs are turned off, which reduces the input quiescent current to 20µA maximum. An internal thermal protection is also provided, which shuts down the regulator when the junction temperature exceeds 170°C.
