DC DC Switching Regulators
The LT3959IFE#PBF is an integrated circuit that functions as a DC DC switching regulator to convert voltages from one form to another. It is primarily used in applications where power efficiency is paramount or where the input supply voltage is both high and variable.
In such applications, the LT3959IFE#PBF is capable of regulating the output voltage of 3.3V/5V/12V/15V/24V with a programmable switching frequency of up to 1MHz. This allows for more efficient power transfer that can reach up to 95% conversion efficiency. Additionally, a 200mA low dropout regulator (LDO) is integrated within the IC to provide an always-on power supply.
Working Principle
The LT3959IFE#PBF operates using a pulse width modulation (PWM) control converter topology, in which the regulator senses the output voltage and adjusts its internal oscillator\' duty cycle accordingly. This allows for fast, precise voltage regulation without compromise on power efficiency. In the control loop, an internal error amplifier (EA) is employed to sense the output voltage deviation against the reference voltage and adjusts its internal duty cycle accordingly.
The internal EA is composed of a voltage reference, comparator and PWM buffer. As the output voltage deviates from the reference voltage, the EA feeds a PWM signal to the oscillator to adjust its duty cycle. At the output stage, an external MOSFET switch is used to switch between two sense resistors that are placed on each side of the output. This process generates a pulsating current through the output coil, and thus generates the output voltage at the required voltage level.
