The LT3973HDD-3.3#PBF is a high-efficiency, high-performance step-up voltage regulator that falls under the PMIC Voltage Regulators DC/DC Switching Regulators classification. With a wide input voltage range of 1.2 V to 5.5 V, it is ideal for use in applications where a higher output voltage from a lower input voltage is required. It can deliver a regulated output voltage of up to 28 V with a maximum output current of 9 A. The device offers a very low quiescent current (Iq) of 5 µA, making it very efficient in battery-powered applications. It has integrated maximum power point tracking (MPPT) and switch current limit current protection that ensures the highest power conversion efficiency.The LT3973HDD-3.3#PBF features an integrated synchronous rectifier, allowing it to achieve a high switching frequency of 1.2 MHz and a very low total harmonic distortion of less than 1%. It also features an adjustable soft-start function to provide a gradual startup and reduce inrush current. The device is further equipped with adjustable overvoltage protection (OVP) and Thermal Shut-Down (TSD) protection to keep the device safe. It is in an 8-pin MSOP package and is lead-free with six Green and RoHS compliant pins.As for its application field, the LT3973HDD-3.3#PBF can be used in a wide range of low-voltage applications, such as in medical electronics, portable instruments, embedded systems and data communications. It can be used for battery charging, low voltage lighting, motor driving, and telecommunication.The working principle of this device is as follows: it is energized from the input, and a high-side power switch is driven with a Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) signal at 1.1MHz. The power switch current is sensed and controlled by a current-mode control loop. Then the power switch turns off, and the converter enters discontinuous conduction mode (DCM). The voltage transfer ratio between the input and output is determined by the magnitude of the duty cycle, and the maximum current of the power switch is determined by the current limit level and demagnetization level.In order to protect the system, the device has several protection features, such as short-circuit protection, thermal shut-down protection, and overvoltage protection. The short-circuit protection will turn off the internal power switch when the peak inductor current reaches a predetermined level. Thermal shut-down is activated when the junction temperature reaches a critical temperature and the power switch is turned off to prevent the component from damaging itself. In order to protect the system from overvoltage, the device is equipped with an adjustable overvoltage protection threshold.Overall, the LT3973HDD-3.3#PBF is a high-efficiency, high-performance step-up voltage regulator, made specifically for low-voltage applications.
