The LT8580HDD#TRPBF is a PWM controller for DC-DC switching converters that eliminates the need for an opto-coupler for feedback and frequency setting. It includes many features commonly used in today\'s switched-mode power supplies such as integrated or external digital soft-start, adjustable current limit, adjustable voltage reference, integrated N-channel MOSFET gate driver, adjustable reference voltage, and overcurrent and overvoltage protection. This combination of features and its simple design makes it suitable for many applications.
Application Field and Working Principle
The LT8580HDD#TRPBF is suitable for efficient high-voltage, step-down power conversion applications such as +12V to +5V, +3.3V, +2.5V, +1.8V, +1.2V, +0.9V and +0.6V variations. Its integrated switch MOSFET gate driver and adjustable high-side current sense limit are specially designed to operate with external N-Channel MOSFET switches up to 85V. It dynamically maintains constant voltage or current operation mode, depending on the user-selected parameters. Its soft-start feature, adjustable switching frequency and synchronizable operation enable the LT8580HDD#TRPBF to be applied in a number of configurations, from single-inductor buck converters to synchronous step-down and flyback converters.
The controller uses peak current mode control and includes an internal high-side sense circuit suitable for producing peak currents in external N-Channel switches. This is accomplished by importing voltage or current information from the feedback and by comparing it against the internal reference (V REF ) and the output of the error amplifier (EAOUT). The error signals are combined and processed in the loop filter to generate an error signal voltage. This voltage is used as an input to the pulse-width modulator (PWM) stage, which determines the duty cycle of the MOSFET switch.
During steady-state operation, the controller samples the feedback voltage or current and compares it to the internal voltage reference. If there is insufficient voltage or current, then the controller increases the duty cycle accordingly. Conversely, when the feedback voltage or current is too high, the controller reduces the duty cycle. As a result, the output voltage or current will remain constant and error free, provided that the load current remains within specified limit.
