The LTC1278-5CSW#PBF is an integrated circuit that describes an analog-to-digital conversion process. Inside, it contains an integrated pre-amplifier, analog input multiplexer, a 16-bit successive approximation register-based (SAR) ADC, an analog-to-digital converter, a reference voltage generator, a series of noise-rejection filters, and a clock generator. When an analog voltage is applied to the ADCs input, the integrated pre-amplifier amplifies the input so that the analog-to-digital conversion process can begin. Next, the analog input multiplexer (MUX) selects one of the several analog inputs to be used in the conversion process. The selected analog input is then converted into a digital code. The ADC then begins its 16-bit SAR process. The successive approximation register, in the SAR converter, is essentially an ideal counter that begins with either a ‘1’ or a ‘0’ and counts up or down, based on the analog voltage applied to the ADC. Then the Integral Non Linearity (INL) is calculated by comparing the output from the ADC (digital value) with its ideal output (analog input).Finally, the output of the SAR, after being corrected for gain, offset, and INL, is sent to the digital interface (I2C or SPI) for further processing.
