Working Principle
The LTC1297CCN8#PBF utilizes a successive approximation conversion method to digitally encode input voltage signals into 8-bit digital words. Voltage conversion time is determined by the internal clock signal. The logic signals controlling the A/D conversion process internally are derived from an oscillator (OSC) with a center frequency of 1.2MHz.
The procedure for successive approximation conversion starts with the reset of a SAR (Successive Approximation Register) by a conversion start signal. Once the SAR is reset, the internal clock signal causes the SAR comparator to take a sample of the signal being converted and then compares it with an internal reference determined by the DAC (Digital to Analog Converter).
The SAR makes an approximation based on the comparison by adjusting the voltage of the output port in small steps. This is repeated until the output of the DAC is within a set tolerance of the signal being measured or the logic levels of the signal have reached a value where the signal could be interpreted as a binary number. At the end of a successful conversion, the SAR’s output is latched into an 8-bit word, along with the status of the MSB (MSB) bit.
