LTC3104EMSE#PBF Application and Working Principle

Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMICs) are specialized virtual components used to convert, manage, protect and store energy within various electrical applications. Linear + Switching Voltage Regulators (also known as low dropout or LDO regulators) are one type of PMICs which adjusts the input and output voltage of a power supply circuit to provide consistent performance along with protection for the system and components. In this article, we will look at the application and working principle of the LTC3104EMSE#PBF Voltage Regulator. The LTC3104EMSE#PBF is a 5-A low quiescent current (IQ), low dropout linear regulator which uses an external P-channel MOSFET to generate an accurate, tightly regulated output voltage. The device maintains a low IQ of 120 nA (typical) with an empty circuit. On-chip features such as thermal shutdown, over-current limiting, reverse battery protection and reverse current protection increase the reliability and stability of the operation. With its low quiescent current and wide operating temperature range (-40°C to +85°C) the LTC3104EMSE#PBF is suitable for many battery-powered applications.The LTC3104EMSE#PBF operates by measuring the difference between the output and feedback pin voltages. When the two pins are not equal the internal error amplifier will output a signal that controls the external P-channel MOSFET. Then, current flows from the input to the output through the body diode and MOSFET gate of the external MOSFET. The voltage drop across the external MOSFET is regulated to a very small value (typically 40 mV at 1A load current) allowing the output voltage to remain within the accuracy of the feedback voltage.The LTC3104EMSE#PBF is ideal for applications such as handheld and bluetooth-enabled consumer electronics, measuring instruments, gaming systems, and medical monitoring devices. Its wide input voltage range (1.5V to 12V) further adds to its versatility and allows the regulator to be efficiently driven directly with a single Li-Ion cell or multiple battery cells (up to 12V).
