LTC3896HFE is an integrated circuit used by power management integrated circuit (PMIC) devices in applications like voltage regulators and DC-DC switching controllers. It is a high-performance dual synchronous PWM Controller with integrated power switch drivers and enables the design of highly efficient, high power density, low layer count DC/DC Converters. It features high switching frequency and programmable dead time for excellent transient response and low-noise performance. It also offers peak current mode control and adjustable current limit as well as easy to use fault protection features like programmable over-temperature protection and power leash control.
The LTC3896HFE is designed to control interleaved, interleaved dual phase and even single output synchronous boost, buck, and buck-boost converters with a wide range of output voltages and current capable of providing up to several hundred loads even with very low output voltage. The device operates with a wide input voltage range (5V to 40V). It is compatible with various power levels and a high efficiency conversion rate (up to 95%*).
The LTC3896HFE features Active Burst Mode® operation to maintain high efficiency at low output currents, pulse by pulse current limit and adjustable frequency. It can be hooked up to much larger outputs with either synchronous or non-synchronous rectifier. The non-synchronous rectifier is made up of two Schottky diodes. It has a sleep mode feature and is protected with an internal over-temperature circuit. Furthermore, the LTC3896HFE provides an external voltage feedback loop to generate a voltage-controlled oscillator signal to regulate the output voltage.
At a pin level, the LTC3896HFE is composed of three major sections:the control section, the power section, and the compensation section. The control section contains both a power and control block, where current and voltage feedback is detected.
The power section consists of a high-gain differential amplifier to detect the voltage across the output of the power stages. This signal is then compared to a length of the input voltage to adjust the power stage duty-cycle. It also houses the low-side synchronous power MOSFET drive circuitry and the high-side power MOSFET drive circuits. To ensure signal stability, an internal turn-off delay signal is generated.
The compensation section contains a low-pass filter for AC ripple compensation. This filter removes the high-frequency transient load transients, thus improving output voltage accuracy. The compensation circuit also contains an internal high-frequency ring oscillator to provide the necessary slew rate for transient response.
Besides the three major sections, the LTC3896HFE also contains a one-shot reset circuit, a sleep mode feature (to reduce current consumption to a minimum during idle or sleep mode), and an over-temperature protection circuit which will shut the power stage off if the internal temperature rises above a predetermined limit.
The LTC3896HFE has numerous applications in power management integrated circuits such as voltage regulators and DC-DC switching controllers. It is highly efficient, small in size, and has a high switching frequency for excellent transient response. It also offers important protection features such as programmable over-temperature protection, power leash control, and pulse-by-pulse current limit.
