LTC3256IMSE#PBF Application Field and Working Principle
The LTC3256IMSE#PBF is a monolithic two-channel DC/DC power supply controller designed specifically for powering precision analog and other complex circuit designs from a single Li-ion, multi-cell NiMH or NiCd battery in space- or power-constrained portable applications. This device integrates two channels of switching power converters, two low dropout linear regulators, one low noise linear regulator, and an advanced power sequencer, optimized to provide the highest power to portable electronics from a single battery.
The LTC3256IMSE#PBF can accept input voltages of up to 28V (maximum of 3 cells), and can provide up to four separate output voltages: 0.8V and 1.5V (for powering low-voltage logic circuits), 3.3V and 5V, the latter of which can be used to charge other Li-ion cells. It can supply up to 500mA of output current in all channels combined. By choosing different combinations of output voltages and current levels, it is possible to use the LTC3256IMSE#PBF for a wide range of applications.
The LTC3256IMSE#PBF operates using a very-low-dropout linear regulator (VLDO) to supply the 0.8V and 1.5V outputs, as well as an integrated high efficiency switch mode DC/DC converter to provide the 3.3V and 5V outputs. It contains an internal energy-sensing element that works in combination with an on-chip synchronous rectifier to maintain a high efficiency across a wide range of input and output voltages. This component also features an advanced power sequencer that allows the user to power up and down the outputs in any desired order, reducing component count and system cost.
In addition to its primary functions, the LTC3256IMSE#PBF also includes a number of system protection functions, including an advanced overvoltage protection (OVP) circuit, shortcircuit protection, undervoltage lockout (UVLO) circuit, and a current monitor. The UVLO circuit ensures that the LTC3256IMSE#PBF is not enabled until the input voltage has reached an operating level. The OVP circuit provides an additional level of protection for the connected circuitry by disabling the device when the output voltage rises above a predetermined level. The current monitor helps protect the device from experiencing output overloads from excessive current drain.
The LTC3256IMSE#PBF is available in a small 20-pin, 4 x 4 mm QFN package, making it an ideal solution for space- and power-constrained portable applications. It is optimized for use in high-efficiency portable power systems and is ideal for powering complex digital and analog circuits from a single Li-ion, multi-cell NiMH or NiCd battery.
