Introduction to LTC3407EDD-3#PBF

The LTC3407EDD-3#PBF is a 5A synchronous step down regulator device from Linear Technology with integrated high side and low side FETs. It provides best in class efficiency levels and adjustable current limit. It includes a shutdown input signal to conserve power when in idle mode. This device is suitable for high power density applications and is able to operate in a wide input voltage range from 4V to 20V for DC-DC power supplies.

Application Field

The LTC3407EDD-3#PBF is suitable for a variety of applications, such as Communication Systems, Server & Storage Systems, Automotive, Industrial, Portable & Wearable Devices, and so forth. Specifically, the device can be used in server system applications, where the input voltage is 12V to 18V, and the output voltages need to be adjustable from 0.8V to 0.9V. Working Principle

The LTC3407EDD-3 is a synchronous step down regulator device which utilizes current mode control with voltage mode regulation to efficiently convert the input voltage to the desired output voltage. The module consists of an analog control circuitry, together with two independent switches. These two switches are N-MOSFETs designed to connect and disconnect the input voltage to the output voltage alternately, thus minimizing switching losses. When the lower switch is turned on, the input voltage is stored in the output inductor, and the output voltage starts to rise. When the upper switch is turned on, the stored energy is released from the output inductor and the output voltage starts to fall. The amount of energy stored in the inductor is controlled by the current mode controller. It does this by controlling the duty cycle of the two switches, which in turn controls the amount of energy stored in the output inductor, thus regulating the output voltage. By controlling the duty cycle of the two switches, the LTC3407EDD-3 is also able to control its operating temperature, which helps to increase the efficiency of the device. Besides, the device also offers adjustable current limit and shutdown signal to conserve power when it is in idle mode.
