Introduction of LTC3616HUDD#PBFThe LTC3616HUDD#PBF is a synchronous step-down switching regulator that combines a high efficiency, 1.5-A, 40-V synchronous buck converter with a precision 4.096-V reference and 10-bit DAC into a single 16-pin 3 mm × 3 mm DFN package. It integrates all the necessary components for a complete system solution to power an LDO, an FPGA core, an RTC, or any other low-voltage application requiring a low output voltage and high accuracy.The synchronous buck converter features a nominal operating frequency of 1 MHz and can be adjusted from 375 kHz to 2.25 MHz. With a power switch in one package and current-mode control, the converter achieves excellent line regulation and load regulation even at light loads. Cycle-by-cycle current limiting, thermal shutdown and short-circuit protection provide full systems protection.Application FieldThe LTC3616HUDD#PBF is ideal for low-voltage applications including industrial, medical and automation control as well as server, storage, embedded and microprocessor systems, FPGAs, ASICs, and system-on-chip (SoC) designs. Its 3 A switch current allows loading up to 3 A without external components. Its integrated bias regulator with a minimum VIN of 3.2 V can provide up to 16 mA for the digital control circuit, allowing the system to be completely regulated with a single supply.Working PrincipleThe LTC3616HUDD#PBF performs DC/DC conversion by converting the input voltage to a fixed switching frequency in the upper switching cell and then controlling the switch-off time so as to maintain a constant output voltage. The output voltage is determined by the value of the fixed external resistor, VREF and the DAC programming voltage. Feedback from the output stage is connected to the input of the current-mode controller, and the feedback voltage is compared to a reference voltage in the upper driver in order to adjust the switch on and off times.The top cell also contains a low-noise low-dropout regulator which supplies the intermediate supply for the LTC3616HUDD#PBF device’s control circuitry and the 10-bit DAC which is used to control the output voltage.
