The LX8554-33CDD integrated circuit is a high precision, 3-channel, low-dropout linear linear voltage regulator developed by Microchip Technology. It is a highly integrated device which combines all the essential components of a linear voltage regulator, including a voltage reference, voltage divider, current sense amplifier, output drivers, and thermal overload/shutdown protection. The device is designed to provide a low-dropout, highly regulated output voltage for consumer, industrial, and automotive applications.

The LX8554-33CDD features a low quiescent current (10µA typical) and low-dropout performance (200mV maximum) across temperature extremes. It is designed to operate with a wide input voltage range of 2.7V to 45V and can provide a regulated output voltage of 1.5V to 26V. The device also features a wide current range of up to 750mA and short-circuit protection.

Applications of the LX8554-33CDD include voltage regulation in automotive (body/cab and infotainment systems) and industrial systems, such as CPUs, power supplies, and power management in consumer, communications, and automotive electronics. Working Principle

The device uses a two-stage linear voltage regulator architecture for for components regulator step-down conversion of voltage and current. First, the output voltage is regulated by a voltage reference (VR1) which operates in a closed loop with the output. The regulated output voltage is also divided down by a resistive divider placed between VOUT and GND. The divided voltage is buffered by an amplifier and monitored by the device.

The feedback path is divided up into two separate parts. The first part is the voltage divider comprised of R1, R2, and R3 that is connected between VOUT and GND. The feedback voltage, VREF, is created by the ratio between R2 and R3. This voltage level is compared with the target voltage, Ref-Set, programmed by an external resistor divider. When the target voltage is reached, the comparator output,Ctrl, is regulated to hold the regulated output voltage constant.

The second part of the feedback path is the current sense amplifier that monitors the output current. The amplifier is connected between VOUT and GND, in parallel with the power FETs and senses the voltage across a sensing resistor. The sensed voltage is then compared with an internal current limit and the Ctrl signal is regulated to keep the output current within the programmed limit. If the current gets too high, fault protection circuitry will be activated.

In addition to the voltage regulation and current sense features, the LX8554-33CDD also provides several features for improved protection and device longevity such as thermal shutdown and fault protection. The thermal shutdown feature protects the device against excessive junction temperatures by shutting down the device if the internal temperature exceeds a set threshold. The fault protection feature will shut down the device in case of an output over-current or an input under-voltage condition.

The LX8554-33CDD is a versatile integrated circuit that provides a highly regulated output voltage and current, thermally protected performance, and advanced protection features that make it ideal for a variety of applications in the automotive and industrial markets.
