TVS (transient voltage suppressor) diodes, such as the LXES03TBB1-141, are semiconductor components used to protect against surge voltages. They clamp the voltage to a safe level for connected parts by shunting electric charge away during an overvoltage spike. They are typically found in DC-to-DC converters, power supplies, and other systems where transient overvoltages are likely.

When an overvoltage is detected, TVS diodes will quickly conduct the unchecked voltage away. This can be done with a unidirectional TVS diode when the overvoltage is caused by static discharge, lightning, or other similar events. When the overvoltage exceeds the “breakover” voltage, the diode turns on. This “on” state imposes a low impedance path for any additional current to flow, thus limiting the voltage at the input of the protected circuits. The diode then turns off when the voltage drops below the “cut-off” voltage, effectively removing the low-impedance path.

The diode can also be triggered by high currents during short-circuit conditions. In this case, the diode acts as a switch, shunting the current away from the protected circuit until the current drops below a safe level. Once the current is below this level, the device will return to its non-conductive state.

TVS diodes, such as the LXES03TBB1-141, provide reliable surge protection for a variety of applications. They are capable of withstanding high voltages and currents, while providing a low capacitance solution suitable for high-speed systems.
