M27C4002-10F6 application field and working principle

M27C4002-10F6 (ST M27C4002-10F6) is a medium density, 32K x 8 bit UV EPROM and OTP EPROM product of the STMicroelectronics family of memory ICs. It is capable of addressing 32 Kbytes of data using a 16-bit address bus; thus making its highly suitable as a medium sized data storage IC. It is compliant to both the Single power supply Voltage (3.3V-5V) and also the dual power supply Voltage (3.3V-5V and 12V) designs.

The M27C4002-10F6 works on an internal connection of a two-wire bus system comprised of the Serial Data (SDA) and Clock (SCL). The device operates on the same principle as a non-volatile memory, where data is stored in a non-volatile manner, even if the power is removed from the system. It is organized as a 32 Kbyte memory array with two 8 bit buses multiplexed over one 16 bit data bus. The device supports 32-bit addressing with one write and one read operation, and multiple byte operations.

Working Principle:

The M27C4002-10F6 works on a principle which has become known as the bipolar architecture. The operation of the device is based on the charge and discharge of a capacitor. Thus, when power is applied to the device, the capacitors are discharged, storing a 1 on the connected bit line and a 0 on the disconnected bit line. This process is repeated for each bit in the device. When the Read operation is initiated, the bit line is sensed and the bit is then read and transmitted out. When a Write operation is initiated, the bit line is disconnected from the capacitor and a pulse of current is applied to charge it. This process is repeated for each bit in the chip.

The M27C4002-10F6 is designed to support two-wire bus programming for single byte write and multi-byte write operations. It supports external events like “sleep” and “wake”. The “sleep” mode is activated when no clock signal is present and the “wake” mode is initiated when an external clock signal is present. This allows the device to be programmed or accessed while it is in either mode.
