Tantalum Capacitors

When a voltage is applied across the capacitor’s terminals, the electric field within the dielectric material causes the positive (tantalum) electrode to be pulled away from the negative (manganese dioxide) electrode. This generates an electrostatic field known as capacitance within the dielectric material. This capacitance is essentially ‘storing’ the energy which can then be used as and when required.

When the voltage across the capacitor is reversed, the energy stored in the capacitance is released back into the circuit. The rate at which this energy is released is determined by the capacitance of the capacitor and the frequency of the voltage. This is important to consider when designing circuits which rely on tantalum capacitors.
