The present article describes the application field and working principle of the MAC08MT1 Thyristor, which belongs to the TRIAC family of thyristors.

What is a TRIAC?

A TRIAC is a three terminal thyristor device with a common terminal (MT1) and two additional control terminals (G1 and G2). It is often referred to as a bidirectional device and is capable of both forward and reverse conduction over half of the alternating current (AC) cycle. This makes it suitable for applications where the current needs to be controlled and switched both directions on the same side of the line.

Application Field

MAC08MT1 is a TRIAC device with a gate connected to MT1. It is used for applications that require both normal and reverse conduction over 180° of each half line cycle. Its applications include industrial pneumatic applications and some motor speed control applications.

This TRIAC device is designed for AC loads in single-phase, three-phase and multiple-phase circuits. It is also used for power switching applications which require low on-state resistance and low switching noise.

Working Principle

The working principle of the MAC08MT1 is based on a ‘latch-up" technique. It switches between forward and reverse conduction by controlling the gate voltage. It works in two half cycles, one for forward conduction and the other for reverse conduction.

When the device is in forward conduction, the anode gate voltage (gate and MT1 connected together) is lowered to the threshold value, making the device conducting and passing current to the load. At this point, current flow reverses and the device is switched to reverse conduction. A similar condition occurs for reverse conduction.

The gate voltage required for latching depends on the load conditions and the load current. The load current should not exceed the nominal current of the device. The device switch-off is achieved with a zero gate voltage.

The MAC08MT1 TRIAC can be used in industrial applications that require both normal and reverse conduction. It is suitable for applications with a wide variety of loads, AC or DC, and is capable of providing good performance. It is used in applications that require low on-state resistance and low switching noise.
