The anodic layer is composed of a porous metal layer which is saturated with a conductive liquid, such as an electrolyte. The cathodic layer consists of a heavier layer of metal, usually aluminum or tantalum, in which an oxide layer is built up. This oxide layer serves as a dielectric material between the two metal layers. The oxide layer provides the electrical insulation necessary for the capacitor to store energy. The oxide layer also acts as a “barrier” to prevent leakage currents from flowing through the capacitor. This is accomplished by the added thickness of the oxide layer in comparison to the anodic layer. As the applied voltage increases, the capacitance of the capacitor also increases.
