Aluminum Electrolytic Capacitors – MAL210452472E3 Application Field and Working Principle

Aluminum electrolytic capacitors (also called ‘electrolytic’) are capacitors that are made up of polarised electrolyte and a tow rolled-up aluminium foil separated by a paper insulator. It is one of the most widely used types of capacitor, due to its high capacitance, low cost and stability.The MAL210452472E3 is an aluminum electrolytic capacitor with a diameter of 10 mm and a length of 25 mm. Its capacitance value is 4.7µF at a rated voltage of 16V. It is characterized by long life, low ESR and impedance and high ripple current tolerance. Its applications include audio crossover networks, power supplies, electronic switch-mode and digital power circuits.The working principle of the MAL210452472E3 is based on the formation of a thin aluminum oxide layer that covers the surface of the aluminum foil. This oxide layer is an insulating material, allowing a positive and negative electric charge to build up on either side of the capacitor. When a voltage is applied to the capacitor, electrons from the negative terminal migrate through the insulator onto the aluminium foil, causing the negative charge to decrease. Simultaneously, holes in the oxide layer allow holes to enter and fill the oxide layer, creating an opposing positive charge and thus a net capacitance. This polarisation process occurs when the voltage is applied, and the capacitance is approximately constant until the niters on the foil are discharged and the capacitor needs to be recharged.The overall performance of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is greatly affected by various physical properties, such as temperature, temperature coefficient of capacitance, self-healing, and ripple current tolerance. The self-healing property refers to the capability of the capacitor to induct a low current pulse which forms a self-healing oxide, preventing failures due to early thermal breakdown. The temperature coefficient of capacitance is also important in capacitor performance and it indicates the level of variances on capacitance when the temperature changes.
