The working principle of an aluminum electrolytic capacitor is based on the principles of electrolysis. A diaphragm or membrane is placed between two conductive plates. These plates are immersed in an electrolyte solution. An electrical field is created across the diaphragm which allows electrical charge to flow through it. As the charge moves through the diaphragm, it creates a localized electric field along with an electrostatic charge. This electric field produces a capacitance or a resistance to the passage of electrical current.

The MAL212385101 aluminum electrolytic capacitor utilizes this principle in order to function effectively. The capacitor is made from two aluminium plates and a ceramic, polyester, or film dielectric material that is tightly wound together. The aluminum plates are secured with rods and screws, which are then connected by a spring that runs through the center of the winding. This creates a structure of two layers of the dielectric material and the aluminum as the electrodes. The capacitor is then filled with an electrolyte solution.

When the capacitor is energized, the electrolyte solution is ionized by the electric current, forming an electrolyte field between the plates. This field creates an electrical dipole that induces an electric field across the alignment of the two plates. This electric field stores the electrical energy and creates a capacitance or a resistance to the passage of electric current.
