Aluminum electrolytic capacitors, often abbreviated as aluminum electrolyte capacitors, are polarized capacitors consisting of two aluminum foil electrodes separated by a layer of an electrolyte containing an oxide layer, typically of aluminum. Despite the name electrolyte, it is not a solution but a carrier medium for ceramic materials. These capacitors have a higher-than-ordinary capacitance, a much better low-frequency linearity and a low equivalent series resistance (ESR). The capacitor dielectric is a thin film of aluminum oxide, formed from the aluminum foil and the electrolyte.
