Analog-to-Digital Converters (ADCs) are usually the second most popular evaluation boards to come to mind when considering evaluation boards. MAX1211EVKIT is a type of evaluation board which is a high-speed, low-power, 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC). It provides a very efficient way to convert the analog signal to a digital signal, allowing the user to prioritize their work by focusing on the conversion process.
The MAX1211EVKIT is a complete evaluation board for the MAX1211 high-speed, low-power 12-bit ADC. The board includes the MAX1211, a low-power 12-bit analog-to-digital converter (ADC), a 20-MHz reference, a temperature sensor, an LED, and a 16-pin GPIO (General Purpose Input/Output) connector for external test signals and/or control. The kit also includes a GUI (graphical user interface) software program for easy evaluation and more detailed measurement since it uses an USB interface.
The MAX1211EVKIT is designed for use anywhere from the automotive to consumer electronics to home appliance applications; it can be used in a variety of applications: batteries, digital thermometers, decelerometer sensors, environmental sensors, sensor applications, and AC line current monitoring. It provides 12-bit accuracy with 0.5 – 10Msps sampling rates, while consuming less than 11mW power.
The onboard reference (MAX1211) is a 20MHz low-noise, low-drift integrated digital-temperature stability reference. This board also includes a temperature sensor (NTC), which is used to measure temperature accurately and reliably. The included LED provides a visual indication of conversion status during testing.
The MAX1211EVKIT works in two modes; the input to the ADC is either a differential input signal or a single-ended input signal according to the selection of the front panel. The ADC operates in either a single-cycle conversion mode with a single conversion (SCM) or a continuous-conversion mode (CCM) with low power consumption.
The single-ended input signal can be AC or DC with an input common mode voltage being 0V to 2.5V. The differential input signal must be AC coupled and the input common mode voltage is selectable from 0V to 2.5V. In the single-cycle conversion mode (SCM), the MAX1211EVKIT will begin sampling the input signal when the CS GPIO is set to LOW, followed by the conversion which will last for up to 9µs after which the CS GPIO is set back to If quadrature conversion mode is selected, the MAX1211EVKIT will continuously measure the differential input signal, which is then used to calculate the two outputs, the positional output (A/B) and the speed output (N/D).
The evaluation board uses dual voltage supplies. The analog side is operated on 3.3V, while the GPIO side is supplied with 1.8V. The GPIO port also allows external selection of the test setup, such as when the temperature sensor is selected, or the internal reference is enabled, or when the external reference is selected.
The MAX1211EVKIT is designed to provide the most accurate and efficient way to convert analog signals to digital signals. The ADC on board provides key features such as 12-bit accuracy, single-cycle conversion mode (SCM) or continuous-conversion mode (CCM), and synchronous quadrature conversion (QCM). The integrated temperature sensor and LED can provide the operator with a visual indication of conversion status. The GPIO interface also makes it easier to monitor and control the on-board devices.
