The MAX16990 Evaluation Kit (EVK) is an evaluation board designed to evaluate the AC/DC and DC/DC power supplies of the MAX16990 active clamp forward (ACF) controller. It implements a ultra-low startup current and high-efficiency active clamp forward (ACF) controller, and allows the user to evaluate the functionality of the MAX16990 in various applications. This evaluation board also features a wide range of features, including a full range of power supply for off-line applications, a secondary-side synchronous rectifier (SR) drive, a buck converter, and a PWM controller with an adjustable switching frequency.

The MAX16990EVKIT offers a complete solution for an AC/DC or DC/DC off-line SMPS. Its active clamp forward (ACF) controller operates with a wide input voltage range from 35V to 420V AC and its output is rated for up to 12A and up to 600V DC. These features enable it to accept a wide range of input voltages, thus making the evaluation board suitable for a broad range of applications.

The primary function of the MAX16990EVKIT is to evaluate the performance of the MAX16990 ACF controller in a variety of applications. It features all the necessary elements to evaluate the performance of the MAX16990 ACF controller in a typical off-line SMPS application, including an external MOSFET, an adjustable sense resistor, and a MOSFET gate driver. Furthermore, the evaluation board incorporates feedback circuitry and bypass components to aid in the evaluation of the controller’s performance.

The working principle of the MAX16990ACF is based on the control and operation of the active high side MOSFET of the power stage. In the operation of the MAX16990ACF, the active high-side MOSFET is switched on when the given input voltage is applied. During the turn-on phase, the MOSFET’s gate-source voltage is ramped up to 3V, and the current through the MOSFET is increased. Once the current reaches its peak, the MOSFET is switched off, allowing the inductor current to be stored in the output capacitor. The output capacitor will then discharge and maintain the output voltage at its set level.

The evaluation kit also supports secondary-side synchronous rectifier (SR) drive, allowing for higher efficiency, as well as a buck converter for reduced power consumption. Furthermore, an adjustable switching frequency is available, allowing for a wide range of operation from 100 kHz to 600 kHz. The board also features two enable pins (EN1 and EN2) which can be used to control the operation of the converter.
