The MAX13054AEASA+ is a serializer/deserializer (Serdes) line driver / receiver. It encompasses all the necessary functions of a physical layer interface, including reference voltage generation and a common mode feedback loop, sinusoidal jitter attenuation, clock and data recovery (CDR), frequency multiplication, and serialization with Differential Signal Encoding( DSE). This device is especially suited for high-speed bidirectional backplane applications, such as Serdes-based gigabit Ethernet, fiber-channel, and Infiniband.

Application Field: The MAX13054AEASA+ is a physically robust, cost-effective transceiver for point-to-point frequency division multiplexed (FDM) communications systems operating at data rates from 1.0625 Gbps to 13.2 Gbps. These Serdes devices have been designed to be used in chip-to-chip, board-to-board, and rack-to-rack applications in the telecom and datacom industries.

Working Principle: The MAX13054AEASA+ is a fully integrated device that is based on the “transmission line triggering” (TLT) architecture. This device is composed of four functional blocks: a high-speed receiver, low-speed encoders and decoders, a high-speed transmitter, and a logic control block. The receiver and transmitter each include a differential coder/decoder (CODEC), a reference voltage generator, an input buffer, loop filter and a high-speed voltage controlled oscillator (VCO). All of these components are required for FDM applications.

The receiver contains an input buffer, CODEC, reference voltage generator, loop filter, and VCO to perform receive functions. The receiver amplifier samples the incoming differential signal at the rate of the data transmission rate, and then converts it into a logic signal using the CODEC. The reference voltage generator isolates the DC component and provides the necessary suppression of AC noise. The loop filter captures the differential data bits from the received signal, and then applies the transmitted data to the VCO. The VCO adjusts its DDR frequency to be an exact multiple of the input rate. The VCO output is locked in phase with the transmitted data.

The transmitter is divided into two sections. The first section, composed of the DAC and reference voltage generator, creates the necessary conditions for encoding the data stream. The second section, the CODEC, encodes the data into the proper differential signal. The two sections of the transmitter work together to provide a reliable and robust output signal. The device also provides jitter attenuation and power management components to ensure reliable operation in a variety of transceiver applications.

The MAX13054AEASA+ offers many advantages over previous transceiver designs. It is extremely low power (up to 50% reduction) and has an integrated sinusoidal jitter attenuator. This jitter attenuator eliminates the need for an external clock to maintain accurate data rate control. This device also offers an extensive set of programmable features, such as FIFO control, bandwidth limiting, data rate control, bypass mode, and line modes. These features make the MAX13054AEASA+ an ideal solution for high-speed interfacing applications.
