The MAX17290 is a Fully-Integrated, Fixed-Frequency, Step-Down Switched-Mode DC-DC Converter that operates from 4.2 V to 28 V input voltage with an adjustable output current of 0.6 to 6 A, and is among the DC-DC switching regulator category of power management ICs (PMIC). It offers highly efficient, step-down conversion to power a wide range of industrial, automotive and communications applications. The Maxim provided, the MAX17290ETCD+T, is the enhanced thermal-design version of the original MAX17290. This version adds an improved thermal performance to the spectrum of features offered by the original MAX17290.
The MAX17290ETCD+T provides high efficiency over the range of load. The device features programmable maximum duty-cycle operation which significantly reduces switching losses at light loads. Low quiescent current and low ripple output voltage modes contribute to low-noise operation. The device operates in either forced Pulse-frequency Modulation (PFM) or Pulse-Width Modulation (PWM) modes of operation. The maximum duty-cycle can be programmed with an external resistor to achieve optimum efficiency at light to heavy loads. Output voltage is accurately controlled to +1.5% with a low-tolerance external resistor, and power-good circuitry ensures that the output voltage is valid.
The MAX17290ETCD+T utilizes a peak current-mode architecture that guarantees proper start-up and protection against overload conditions. To safeguard against a wide range of fault conditions, the device provides over-voltage, over-current, and junction temperature protection. The device is available in a thermally enhanced 16 Pin TSSOP-EP package.
The over-current condition protection is implemented to prevent damage to the DC-DC regulated output from overload or short-circuit conditions. It is based on the inductor peak current that is sensed by a dedicated over-current comparator. The over-current setting is independently programmable with an external resistor. The current limit is normally set to a value higher than the steady-state output current and can be trimmed for transparent control at light loads.
The over-voltage protection of the MAX17290ETCD+T helps the user to maintain a safe operating condition for the DC-DC converter. It prevents uncontrollable output voltage rise in fault situations. The over-voltage protection voltage is determined using an internal voltage divider whose minimum divider ratio is determined at 0.85. An external resistor to ground sets the maximum divider ratio before triggering the over-voltage condition. For quick recovery from the over-temperature try/soft-start, both the on-time and off-time of the switch are increased. The power switch is quickly turned off, and similarly the soft start timer gradually ramps up until the fault condition is cleared.
