MAX1480AEPI, a low-power half-duplex transceiver IC and part of the MAX148x product family designed for the EPI (Encoded Position Interface) in the application field of motor drive control, is a freewheeling diode bridge provides safe overvoltage protection. It supports 19.2k baud rate, as well as clock and data recovery depending on the type of application.MAX1480AEPI has an analog switch controlled by software, an internal transmitter overrun detect NMI and logic level receiver line inversion mode.

In order to improve the overall performance and reduce the power consumption of the system, MAX1480AEPI driver has been built with several types of functions:

  1. High speed data rate up to 19.2k baud. This ensures that higher data rates can be achieved without loss of quality of the transmitted data.
  2. Low power consumption. The chip operates at a total of 3.2 mW under a 12 V DC supply.
  3. Fault protection. With this feature, any short-circuit or over-current faults can be detected and resolved.
  4. Error correction. A combination of checksum and 16-bit Cyclic Redundancy Check (CRC) make sure that data received is kept clean and accurate.
  5. Soft start. This upstart feature reduces the inrush current and prevents the overloading of DRV and PWM outputs.

MAX1480AEPI works by detecting a start-bit and end-bit pattern within the transmitted data, thus allowing the receiver to differentiate between logical signals. The acknowledgement bit is a simple low voltage pulse placed between the start and end bits which helps to ensure that the sender and receiver are able to determine if their message hasthe been successfully sent. The transmitter\'s error correction system works by calculating the value of the checksum sent. Once the checksum is calculated the receiver can detect an error and discard the entire message. This way the system can detect errors caused by noise and other disturbances in the transmission.
