The MAX14824ETG+ by Maxim Integrated is a four-channel, I2C-compatible, bidirectional level shifter designed for the interface of low-voltage CMOS components to CMOS/TTL logic at 5.5V(max). This device converts logic signals from the I2C master at 3.3V to 5.5V and vice versa, allowing bi-directional communication with CMOS/TTL logic levels and higher power microcontrollers (MCUs). With minimal external components, the MAX14824ETG+ provides orderly and reliable communication between 3.3V and 5.5V devices and allows for up to 2A of current to be drawn from the I2C bus.
The MAX14824ETG+ is feature-packed, offering an operating voltage range of 0.5V to 5.5V, and with its open drain driver, a maximum output current of 2A for both the SDA and SCL pins. The device also features a built-in I2C repeater that prevents data corruption and allows for pull-up resistors to be mounted close to the device. Additionally, the MAX14824ETG+ offers a precision undervoltage lockout (UVLO) function, as well as an automatic power−down/power-up sequencing, that prevents glitches. Lastly, the device provides Thermal Shutdown (TSD) and Overtemperature (OT) protection to prevent damage caused by thermal runaway.
The working principle of the MAX14824ETG+ relies on two key components: the logic-level translator and the open-drain driver. The logic level translator converts the logic level between the 3V3 I2C bus and the 5V5 logic output from the device, allowing bi−directional communication with the logic I/O. The open-drain driver operates at either 3V3 or 5V5 levels, depending on the output of the logic level translator. The driver allows for up to 2A of current output for each of the I2C pins and prevents data corruption by disabling the pull-up resistors in order to prevent excessive current draw by the slaves attached to the bus. When the MAX14824ETG+ is enabled, the open-drain driver allows the bus to be pulled low by the slave devices. When disabled, the bus is pulled up to the high level by the pull-up resistors.
The MAX14824ETG+ is ideal for powering low-voltage sensors and actuators in industrial automation and medical applications. Additionally, the device can be used for rapid prototyping for various applications, as well as for advanced robotics and autonomous navigation systems. It also has a wide range of applications in consumer electronics, such as battery-powered handheld equipment, portable media players, and digital home appliances.
