The MAX14871EVKIT Evaluation and Demonstration Boards and Kits offer an evaluation platform for the MAX14871 high integration, high efficiency regulator, allowing operation from a single-cell battery for all portable applications. The MAX14871EVKIT includes a digital control board, USB connections, and a target board consisting of a MAX14871 high voltage buck converter. The evaluation board provides an easy way for device evaluation, enabling the user to evaluate the performance of the power regulator under different supply conditions and target loads.

The application field of the MAX14871EVKIT is to provide higher efficiency during low current loads with reduced number of external components necessary. It is designed to operate over a wide input voltage from 2.6 volts to 5.5 volts, and outputs a regulated voltage of 1.8 volts to 5.5 volts. The working principle of the MAX14871EVKIT evaluation board is based on the P and PMOS buck up-conversion topology. The control side accepts the input voltage, which is used to charge an internal photoflash capacitor, providing the power stage with oscillatory pulses at the desired frequency. During each cycle, the power switch is enabled by the driving signal, and it switches the current from the input voltage source to the output capacitor. The current flows through the external power switch and the output diode until the energy stored in the output capacitor is enough to maintain the output voltage.

The output voltage of the regulator is controlled by a feedback signal from the shunt regulator, when it reaches close to the desired output voltage, the internal photoflash capacitor will discharge the oscillatory pulses at a slower rate to reach the desired output voltage. During the normal oscillatory operation, the output voltage remains substantially constant. The utilization of synchronous FET out-phasing operation on the circuit board reduces the power losses, resulting in an efficient power-supply solution.

The MAX14871EVKIT offers a wide variety of digital control options, enabling the user to adjust the output voltage level accurately. The evaluation board also incorporates an easy-to-use GUI, allowing the user to program and monitor the output voltage and current parameters of the board. This allows the user to monitor the power-supply performance of the board, and also permits experimentation to achieve the desired system performance through adjustments to the output voltage and current settings.
