The MAX1487CUA+ is a fully integrated, low-power, single supply, RS-485/RS-422 transceiver. It features a low-power logic compatible control input that enables the shutdown feature for improved power savings. This device provides low-power shutdown and logic compatibility for applications that require a logic-controlled power-up and power-down system. The MAX1487CUA+ transceiver is designed to take advantage of both the low-power and ruggedness of RS-485 and the high data rates of RS-422 communications.

Application Field of MAX1487CUA+

The MAX1487CUA+ is used for interfacing between full-duplex communications line such as RS-485 and RS-422. It can also be used in low-power consumer applications such as remote control systems, cell phones, television receiver controllers, PDAs and any device that requires a low-power control of an RS-485/RS-422 interface. This device is normally used in point-to-point communication and multi-drop bus systems. Some common applications are home-automation, industrial automation, remote instrumentation, telecom systems, smart meters etc.

Working Principle of MAX1487CUA+

The MAX1487CUA+ is a fully integrated transceiver which contains both the receiver and transmitter sections as well as the necessary control circuits. The receiver section consists of four circuit blocks. These are:

  • Receiver amplifier
  • Input data detect and recovery circuit
  • Line termination and logic level detection circuit
  • Low-power logic compatible control circuits
The transmitter section consists of three circuit blocks. These are:
  • Driver amplifier and output circuit
  • Output data detect and recovery circuit
  • Protection and termination circuit
The MAX1487CUA+ is designed to support full-duplex communication over the two-wire RS-485/RS-422 network. It includes three sets of current sense resistors which allow it to detect the presence of a low-power logic compatible signal on the input and send a corresponding signal on the output. The device is also designed to enable Shutdown mode to save power when the interface is not in use. This is done by using an Input Enable/Shutdown pin for logic control.

The device also offers protection from overvoltage and polarity reversal protection on its outputs. The MAX1487CUA+ can transmit data up to a speed of 25Mbps on the RS- 422 system and 12Mbps on the RS-485 system. The device has an internal switch which allows it to shift from RS-485 to RS-422 operation easily.

The MAX1487CUA+ is a low-power transceiver which is designed for use in demanding applications where reliability and robustness are important. It can operate over a wide temperature range and is ideal for use in mission-critical, harsh environments. It is also suitable for use in home and industrial automation, remote control systems, consumer electronics and any other application where low-power and reliability are important.
