The MAX15303ETL+T is a highly integrated, 3-channel PMIC for multi-channel DC/DC switching regulator applications. This PMIC is designed for high-end server, enterprise and datacenter applications, and offers the highest current density and best-in-class efficiency. It is ideal for powering complex multi-channel DC/DC configurations such as multi-core processors, dual die FPGAs, GPUs, and multiple voltage rails in server and communication systems.

The MAX15303ETL+T is the only device of its kind that integrates three high-efficiency switching regulators, along with various protection and monitoring functions. It is offered in a tiny 0.800mm x 0.960mm MLF—6 package, and can provide up to 3A per channel in a typical configuration, with low 72mΩ channel-to-channel on-resistance. All three channels are independently programmable, and include integrated fast diode, current sensing, and integrated under-voltage lockout (UVLO) functions.

The PMIC also features a low power standby mode, adjustable soft-start, output overvoltage and short-circuit protection, and a boot-strap capacitor for higher output voltage. With the MAX15303ETL+T, system designers can configure their own custom switching regulator solution with minimal external components. As a result, the device can simplify and optimize their solution in both size and efficiency.

Working Principle

The working principle of the MAX15303ETL+T is based on the buck-boost converter topology. A buck-boost converter is an efficient circuit that can be used to convert any input voltage to a fixed output voltage. It is composed of an inductor, a diode, and a switch. The diode and inductor are used as energy storage elements, while the switch is used to switch the energy storage elements in order to regulate the output voltage.

In the case of the MAX15303ETL+T, the output voltage is regulated using a pulse width modulation (PWM) signal. When the PWM signals are high, the switch is closed, and the inductor sends current to the output capacitor, which will lower its voltage if the output voltage is higher than the reference voltage. When the PWM signals are low, the switch is open, and the diode sends current to the output capacitor, which will increase its voltage if the output voltage is lower than the reference voltage.

With this topology, it is possible to regulate the output voltage of the MAX15303ETL+T from 0.6V to 4.3V. The device also features a built-in current-flow monitor, which enables precise current sensing in each channel and ensures that the switch on/off duty cycle is always under control.
