Introduction

MAX15303ETL+ is a step-up DC-DC switching regulator power module for providing a voltage output which is higher than input voltage. It is part of a group of voltage regulators categorized as PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) specifically DC DC Switching Regulators. This article shall provide a detailed discussion of the technology and operation of the MAX15303ETL+.

Technology

The MAX15303ETL+ features a high-efficiency synchronous constant frequency buck-boost converter with low quiescent current and high output current. It is available in either 4mmx6mm thermally enhanced TDFN\'s. It operates with a 5V to 24V input supply and regulated output voltage of 3.3V, 5V, 9V, 12V and 15V with an accuracy of ±2%. It also provides up to 1.6A output current with peak current of up to 2A and 625kHz fixed switching frequency. It also boasts of 97.2% efficiency at 3.3V and 1A output from 5V input. The MAX15303ETL+ is protected against short circuits and over-temperature and includes current limiting, undervoltage lock-out as well as thermal folding of the switching frequency in case of an overload. It also offers 2 different operating modes. These are pulse-width modulation (PWM) and low-noise PWM (LN PWM) mode which can be toggled between the two via an on-chip logic input. The PWM mode increases the output current ripple while the LN mode reduces the output current ripple but at the cost of slightly lower efficiency.The MAX15303ETL+ features an integrated power MOSFET and low drop-out regulator (LDO). An external Schottky diode is required to be connected externally which completes the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) functionality of the module. The module also features an output enable (J1) input which facilitates power cycling thus provides power saving when unloaded.

Working Principle

The MAX15303ETL+ operates on the constant frequency buck-boost converter principle. It is basically a combination of a buck regulator and a boost regulator depending on the input voltage. In case of 4.5V to 14V input voltage range, the buck converter regulates the input voltage to about 98% of the output voltage for best efficiency. In case of higher or lower input voltage relative to the output voltage, the buck-boost converter operates as a boost or buck converter to regulate the output voltage. The switching frequency of the MAX15303ETL+ is fixed to 625kHz and is synchronized with the input voltage. The Schottky diode and external power MOSFET form a boost diode rectifier configuration and the internal power MOSFET forms the switch node. The connection of the two MOSFETs forms an H-bridge thus enabling bidirectional current flow. The drain terminals of the two MOSFETs include two internal Proportional Integral (PI) controllers which helps maintain a stable output current even under varying loads. Upon application of the input voltage, the integrated internal charge pump provides gate voltage of 28V to the power MOSFETs which helps kick start the process. The internal compensated current-mode 1.2-MHz oscillator and voltage-mode double-dissipation control circuit sense the inductor current and output voltage respectively and provides necessary circuit inputs for load-transient response and over-voltage protection.
