The MAX1544ETL+ is a special purpose voltage regulator and a high-performance member of Maxim Integrated’s voltage regulator portfolio. It offers integrated, high-accuracy, digital control and monitoring capabilities that are ideal for power management needs with moderate to high power demands. This application note describes the applications and working principles of the MAX1544ETL+ voltage regulator.


The MAX1544ETL+ is designed to allow designers to implement integrated power management systems with low input-to-output voltage conversion ratios. It can accept a wide input range and is capable of delivering up to 3 amps of current. The MAX1544ETL+ also provides a range of digital control features such as programmable output voltage, programmable overvoltage protection, programmable current limit, and programmable soft start. Additionally, the MAX1544ETL+ features a wide range of configurable features such as an adaptive output ripple filter, phase-locked loop (PLL) clock output, and readback of operating parameters and event logs.


The MAX1544ETL+ voltage regulator is designed to operate with a synchronous rectification technique. This technique utilizes two switching devices that operate with a fixed PWM signal. The first switching device is used to control the output current and the other is used to regulate the voltage on a feedback loop. The switching devices are enabled by the PWM signal, which is generated by the regulator IC. This signal is phase-shifted based on the output current to allow for synchronous rectification and precise voltage regulation. The voltage is regulated by comparing the feedback voltage from the output of the regulator to an internal voltage reference.
