MAX15576GTG+ Application Field and Working Principle The MAX15576GTG+ and devices in the same product family are Ultra-Low-Iq buck voltage regulators designed to power very sensitive portable devices with precision, low-noise and excellent transient response. The application area of the MAX15576GTG+ device is wide. From handheld electronic pH meters and blood pressure monitors, through wireless batteries, to wireless pet tracking RFID tags, this tiny device can provide an ultra-low quiescent current, and an efficient and clean output voltage for the application.The MAX15576GTG+ belongs to the PMIC - Voltage Regulators - Special Purpose family. The device consists of two independent buck regulators (plus one LDO depending on the device selected) with an input voltage up to 5.5V and an output voltage range of 0.7V - 5.15V. The chip has several features that make it the perfect fit for power sensitive applications: ultra low quiescent current, high efficiency, wide range of step-down output voltage, fast transient response and no current limit. The MAX15576GTG+ is designed with a maximum output current of 300mA. This makes it an excellent choice for compact portable applications as it reduces power dissipation - something of great importance to battery powered applications. The internal current limit ensures the device won\'t suffer damage in the event of a short circuit. Besides the MAX15576GTG+ device, the product family includes several other devices with different configurations. Depending on the specific device, the power configuration can vary from a single buck converter with a LDO regulator to a dual buck converter with the option of a third LDO. Additionally, a power-slew mode (the device will shut off the output if the input voltage is reached up to 0.8V higher than the output voltage) is integrated in some MAX15576GTG+ devices.The MAX15576GTG+\'s Internal Operating Principle The MAX15576GTG+ switch voltage regulator works on the principle of pulse width modulation (PWM). The device regulates the output voltage by switching a power transistor on and off for a certain ratio of time (hence why it is also referred to as a "switching regulator").The device works with an internal oscillator that is set to 63 kHz. When triggered, the oscillator turns the power transistor on.Whenever the output voltage drops below the set value, the oscillator turns the power transistor off. This means that the output voltage is controlled by a feedback loop through an error amplifier.When the power transistor is on, the device is said to be in the "on-time". When the power transistor is off, the device is said to be in the "off-time". The on/off time ratio is adjusted so that the output voltage remains as close as possible to the desired voltage.In addition to the main registers, the device has several other internal registers used to adjust its operational characteristics.
