Introduction

The MAX1595ETC50+T is an integrated regulator and portion of an PMIC (Power Management Integrated Circuit) family of devices which provides power regulation, control and switching at the board level. This device is specially suited for use in portable applications where high performance and low-power consumption are of highest priority. By leveraging the integrated voltage regulator, switching/control ICs, and other components as part of PMICs, designers can optimize design performance, reduce design complexity and total component count, and minimize their overall system costs.

Application Field

The MAX1595ETC50+T is suited to regulated DC-DC switching converter applications, such as USB ports, set-top box power supply, LCD and LED display power, embedded vision and imaging system, computing and communication systems, laptop, netbook and notebook power supplies, industrial and medical instruments, and battery-powered/portable systems, etc. In a specific application, the device can provide up to 5.0A output current for various load applications. Its integrated devices cover the range from input voltage of 2.3V-5.5V to 18V, enabling a step-down application from higher input voltage or efficient buck-boost application from lower voltage to higher output voltage.

Working Principle

The MAX1595ETC50+T is a synchronous DC-DC converter with an accurately regulated output voltage. To simplify integrated control circuitry, the MAX1595ETC50+T incorporates an internal regulator connected to its control loop that provides a regulated voltage feedback signal. The regulator uses the combination of an external compensation network and internal feedback loop to provide a constant output voltage in the face of varying input voltage and load while maintaining the highest possible power transfer efficiency.The block diagram of a typical application circuit of the MAX1595ETC50+T is shown in Figure 1 below. The input voltage is supplied to the device by either a battery (for portable applications) or an AC adapter (for desktop/server/industrial applications). The input voltage is regulated to a desired voltage levels by a voltage regulator. The regulated voltage is then supplied to the IC through which it is further regulated to the required output voltage. For the MAX1595ETC50+T, the output voltage is controlled using a fixed frequency PWM buck converter topology. The output of the IC is then used to power the various load applications with a constant regulated voltage.

In the case of a step-down application (input voltage is higher than the output voltage), the MAX1595ETC50+T converts the higher input voltage to a lower output voltage by switching a portion of the input current between the input and output by alternating the switch between on and off a few hundred kHz. This process is called Pulse Width Modulation (PWM), and it requires monitoring of the output voltage to ensure that the output voltage stays close to its target setpoint, even in the presence of wide voltage and load swings. For the MAX1595ETC50+T, the output voltage is controlled using a fixed frequency PWM buck converter topology. The MAX1595ETC50+T uses a low-ripple voltage mode architecture with a constant frequency of typically 680kHz.In buck-boost applications, the input voltage and output voltage is same, and the device acts as an efficient energy transfer and buffer between the two nodes. In such applications, the MAX1595ETC50+T provides sufficient energy conversion and transfer to maintain a constant output voltage.
