Fundamental to any electronic system is the ability to power it ∼, providing both voltage and current levels suitable for the components, while at the same time dissipating excess heat. Several different DCDC topologies exist in power-management integrated circuits (PMICs), and the most popular, and arguably most efficient, are switching DCDC regulators (also known as switched-mode or switching regulators). Here, a MAX1677EEE+ switching-regulator PMIC is presented, and its applications and features are discussed. The MAX1677EEE+ PMIC is a current-mode buck step-down regulator with a wide 4.5V to 40V input voltage range and up to 22A of output current. It employs a fixed frequency current-mode architecture that offers fast transient response plus excellent line and load regulation. The chip provides a comprehensive set of protection functions, including current limit, short-circuit protection and thermal protection. Additionally, the device operates with a programmable soft-start feature, continuous short-circuit protection and an internal voltage reference.

Working Principle

The basic working principle of the device is that it converts the input voltage to a programmable output voltage, while maintaining a constant ratio of output Voltage to the input voltage. This is accomplished by switching the output switches at a constant frequency and modifying the duty-cycle of each switch so that the desired output voltage is delivered. The chip also has the ability to change the frequency to maintain efficiency over the whole line and load range, meaning this single chip can be used as a cost-effective solution over a wide range of applications. The functioning of the output is divided into two modes by the device: Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) mode and Pulse Frequency Modulation (PFM) mode. The former is used when a low-output ripple is desired, at the cost of higher quiescent current. The latter operates at low quiescent current, but with higher output ripple. Both of these operating modes have their advantages, and the chip can be configured to either mode according to need.

Applications

The MAX1677EEE+ is suitable for a wide range of applications, such as PoE (Power over Ethernet) and other Ethernet-connected systems, notebook and desktop computer supplies, off-line applications, adapters, AC-DC and DC-DC switching supplies, industrial-control equipment, communications systems and telecommunication systems.For PoE applications, the MAX1677EEE+ provides up to 18A of total output current, delivering up to 9A per port. This allows the device to be used in systems requiring up to 12W of total output power. Additionally, the device has full dynamic control of the output current and the port power, which allows it to be applied in Power-Sourcing Equipment (PSE) applications. This means the chip can control current for up to 4 Powered Devices (PDs) simultaneously, each receiving up to 2W of power.For other Ethernet-based systems, the device offers full support for Fast Ethernet (10/100Mbps) as well as Gigabit Ethernet (1000Mbps). Additionally, it supports the low-voltage differential (LVD) signaling protocol. This allows the chip to be used in Ethernet systems requiring up to 15W of total output power.The features and application support of the MAX1677EEE+ make it ideal for a wide range of high-current, high-power applications. With its comprehensive range of protection features, the chip provides reliable, efficient power conversion and controlled power delivery to meet a variety of needs and requirements.
