The MAX16813AUP+T is a current-mode, buck-boost LED driver designed to drive one or multiple LEDs with constant current. With its current-mode control scheme, the device provides accurate average LED current over a wide range of operating conditions. Since the MAX16813AUP+T is a buck-boost device, it can drive the LED string from either a positive or negative supply. To minimize external component count, the MAX16813AUP+T includes an on-board, high-side current sense resistor and separate LED string cathode drive outputs.

Working Principle

The MAX16813AUP+T is a current-mode, buck-boost LED driver that features robust current regulation. Its architecture maintains a constant LED current, regardless of variations of input voltage or the variation of forward voltage of the LED strings. The device features wide input supply range, 1.8V to 36V, which enables the device to drive LEDs from either a positive or negative supply voltage.

Current regulation is accomplished by sensing the LED current on the high-side via an on-board current sense resistor. Since this current sense resistor is shared by all LED strings, the current of all LED strings is accurately regulated. The LED current is regulated through Pulse Width Modulation (PWM) of the LED current.

The MAX16813AUP+T further reduces external component count by providing separate LED string cathode drive outputs to sink the LED current while controlling the device parameters. The low-side sinking of the LED current in the device reduces the power losses associated typically with the high-side N-channel MOSFET.
