The MAX16834EVKIT+ is an evaluation board which is used to evaluate the performance of the MAX16834 LED driver. This in-system programmable, low-voltage, low-power, pulse width modulation (PWM)-controlled, DC-DC step-up converter is typically used as a general-purpose stepped-up voltage source for driving high-power LEDs from a single cell Li-ion or two- to three-cell alkaline/NiMH battery. It can be programmed to control LED current from a PWM signal from an external microcontroller or directly from an analog signal.
The MAX16834EVKIT+ is designed to provide current up to 2A and offer up to 5V output voltage. It can be used in applications needing higher brightness over the 0.5A range with a small 5-pin SOT23 package. This evaluation board enables easy evaluation of the device performance and includes components necessary to operate on a variety of fixed or PWM regulated output current ranges.
When the battery voltage drops below the input voltage range, the DC/DC converter steps down the voltage and sends the correct voltage to the LEDs. In applications where the LED current is regulated via an external microcontroller, this LED driver measures the LED current and reports back to the microcontroller. The PWM setting of the device can be configured to operate in either synchronous or asynchronous mode; this ensures that all of the LED elements are powered synchronously and consistently. In addition, the rising and falling delays of the PWM signal can be adjusted to create a customized frequency for controlling the LED current.
The MAX16834EVKIT+ can also be used in multi-channel LED applications where one channel can be dedicated to controlling the dimming of the LEDs. This channel can be used either to adjust the LED brightness, or to create color-coordinated lighting for a multi-LED product. It can also be used for emergency lighting, where a single LED is assigned to a designated channel and used to show emergency status.
