The MAX16840EVKIT provides a convenient way to evaluate MAX16840, an integrated, high-power LED driver IC designed to drive up to six strings of LEDs in a variety of rich lighting applications. This evaluation board can be used for boards at both DC and dimmable AC applications and allows for efficient driving and dimming of LED strings up to 42V and 1.2A. This makes it ideal for applications such as general lighting and home lighting.

The MAX16840EVKT comes with a set of features that assists in the evaluation and control of LED lighting systems. The evaluation board features eight programmable power configurations which enable light designers to maximise the LED drive and adjust the LED profile to suit their application. It also features pre-set LED dimming and LED power control algorithms which allow for the optimisation of LED performance and energy efficiency.

The MAX16840EVKIT is a board containing the MAX16840 IC. This IC provides the main features required to drive and control LED strings. The MAX16840 is based on a buck-boost architecture which ensures a maximum efficiency and low EMI generation. The MAX16840EVKIT working principle is based on the control of current flows through inductor-capacitor (LC) networks. When a voltage is applied to the gate terminal of an LC network, the current flowing through it will become proportional to the applied voltage. This is known as a buck-boost converter since it takes an input voltage, amplifies it and then pushes it through an LC network to boost it again. The MAX16840 IC utilises this principle to efficiently drive and control LED strings. It does so by converting the voltage supplied by an AC or DC power supply into a suitable driving voltage for the LED strings. By adjusting the duty cycle and frequency of the buck-boost converter, the LED strings can be dimmed as required.
