PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators

The MAX16900AUE/V+T is an integrated controller used in voltage step-down (buck) DC-DC switching regulators. This device offers excellent transient performance across a wide input voltage range. The MAX16900AUE/V+T integrates a high internal gain control loop with a low noise, wideband ( >1MHz )error amplifier, a current-mode driving circuit with a high switching frequency and pulse-width-modulation (PWM) logic block. It features an adjustable output voltage, operating frequency and output current limit as well as power-good flag. The device can also be used to regulate an input voltage that is higher than or lower than the output.

Application Field

The MAX16900AUE/V+T is a versatile, low drop-out (LDO) voltage regulator. It can be used to step down, step up or level shift the input voltage in a variety of applications, such as automotive, consumer, industrial and medical. The maximum output current of 4A at a wide input voltage range of 2.6 V to 26 V makes it suitable for applications that require a high load current, as well as for portable electronics. The device is suitable for efficient and quiet power systems, since it has a built-in internal compensation and generates virtually no additional EMI noise.

Working Principle

The MAX16900AUE/V+T controller is based on a current-mode driving circuit, which uses the input current signal to control the on/off period of the power switch. The output voltage is programmable via an external resistor divider, and the output current is limited by an external resistor. The device also uses pulse-width-modulation (PWM) logic to adjust the duty cycle of the power switch. The operating frequency of the power switch is adjustable via an external resistor, and the device can also be synchronized to an external clock.

The MAX16900AUE/V+T integrates a high gain error amplifier to detect and correct the output voltage errors without displacing too much power. This error amplifier is coupled with a low noise precision voltage and current sensing circuit, which helps to achieve very accurate output voltage and current regulation. The device also has a power-good flag that signals the output voltage is within predetermined accuracy range.

The MAX16900AUE/V+T also has a thermal shutdown feature that trips and shuts down the system if the junction temperature exceeds an adjustable temperature threshold to prevent damage. In addition, the device features short-circuit protection and a special cycle by cycle current limiter for maximum protection.
