MAX16907RATE+T is a high-efficiency buck DC-DC switching regulator in the power management integrated circuit(PMIC) family. It offers multiple switching frequencies of 300kHz and 600kHz, allowing users to achieve both high efficiency and fast transient response. Its architecture is optimized for the highest efficiency possible. It also provides total output current sensing, enabling users to easily customize their board-level current limit.

This DC-DC switching regulator includes an integrated 250mV reverse current sense amplifier to logic-level enable the device, as well as an integrated thermal-shutdown loop and overcurrent protection. The MAX16907RATE+T is ideal for applications such as FPGAs, ASICs, and processors, and is suitable for a wide variety of other high current applications. It offers the flexibility to easily interface with digital logic while providing fast transient response and excellent regulation.

Application Field & Working Principle

The MAX16907RATE+T is designed for regulating a variety of loads from battery-powered or AC-powered AC/DC supplies, including FPGA, ASIC, and processor cores for DC-DC applications. Its low RDSON integrated P-channel MOSFET enables higher efficiency at low load currents. When used as a synchronous buck regulator, it operates with high efficiency at input voltages between 2.95V and 20V, and can provide up to 8A continuous output current without the need for an external current sense amplifier.

At the same time, the device’s integrated reverse current protection, spread spectrum clocking, and adaptive bias voltage enable superior performance in noise-sensitive applications. The MAX16907RATE+T can also be used as a power-converter to regulate intermediate bus voltages. When used in this manner, the device can achieve up to 97.7% efficiency for intermediate bus voltages between 0.8V and 6V.

In addition, the MAX16907RATE+T features a fast-transient response and maintains excellent regulation over a wide range of input voltage, load current, and temperature conditions. During operation, the power stage continuously adjusts the duty cycle of the "on" and "off" times to maintain a constant output voltage despite changes in the input voltage, load current, temperature, and other environmental conditions.

The MAX16907RATE+T is capable of operating in both pulse width modulation (PWM) and pulse frequency modulation (PFM) modes. In PWM mode, the device can maintain a tighter regulation while minimizing ripple on the output voltage. The PFM mode, on the other hand, allows the regulator to operate at lower current levels with reduced switching frequency, enabling higher efficiency over a wide range of load current. The device also features current mode control, which provides improved voltage regulation and line transient performance.
