The MAX16961SAUEA/V+ is a step-up voltage regulator from Maxim Integrated, one of the world’s leading designers and manufacturers of Advanced Power Management ICs. This Voltage Regulators is categorized from PMIC - Voltage Regulators - DC DC Switching Regulators. The MAX16961SAUEA/V+ is a versatile step-up DC/DC converter for battery operated applications. With its wide input and output range and low operating current, it offers a very efficient power solution and is suitable for a variety of consumer and industrial applications such as smart phones, handheld devices, IoT, and LED lighting. The REGEN pin allows the voltage regulator to synchronize to an external system clock, and the VINUV pin allows for setting of a minimum input voltage.The MAX16961SAUEA/V+ is designed to run in a continuous mode, with a fixed switch frequency of 500kHz. It is a 2A/3A peak/2A/1.5A continuous inductor current, works up to 5A peak, and runs from an input voltage of 2.7V to 5.5V, with an output voltage up to 24V. This Voltage Regulator is offered in a 1.125mm x 1.125mm, quad flat no-lead (QFN) package, which is suitable for a wide range of applications.Operation Principle:
The MAX16961SAUEA/V+ works by charge pumps and linear regulators. Firstly, the charging pumps will draw current from the input voltage source and build up a capacitively stored supply that is used to power the main regulator. When the input voltage is above the regulated output voltage, the linear regulator will drive the main regulator switch fully on and directly power the load. The output of the linear regulator is the regulated output voltage. When the input voltage is lower than the regulated output voltage, the main regulator switch is driven off, and the charge pump supplies power to the load until the voltage falls below the regulated output voltage again. This cycle creates a step-up voltage regulator that is capable of providing a regulated output voltage with a wide range of varying input voltages.
Making use of the advanced technology available, the MAX16961SAUEA/V+ is designed to offer maximum efficiency both in normal and standby mode, making it ideal for energy-saving applications. The IC\'s switching frequency can be controlled, and can be set to the most suitable frequency for the given application. The big, halfbridge fully integrated driver has a charge pump which reduces switching losses, resulting in a higher efficiency of the total system.
It also includes an adjustable input voltage under voltage lock out (UVLO) function and a fixed high-side current limit option. The adjustable high-side current limit enables the use of a range of inductors and output capacitors sizes to reduce the size of the BOM and overall cost.
