MAX16976AEE/V+ is a member of Maxim Integrated’s family of Power Management Integrated Circuits (PMIC). It is an advanced, monolithic, step-down, DC-to-DC switching regulator which operates over a universal (4.5 V to 60 V) input voltage range. With integrated power FETs, the regulator delivers up to 4 A output current and sets new standards in flexibility and integration. PMIC is designed to provide a comprehensive solution for mobile and battery-powered applications from consumer and telecommunications to automotive, computing, intelligent buildings and industrial systems. The MAX1697xA family of DC-to-DC synchronous buck regulators is designed to deliver accurate regulated voltage for any voltage rails in battery-powered systems.The MAX16976AEE/V+ is specifically designed to deliver a low-noise and low-ripple output voltage across a wide input voltage range while consuming very little power in no-load or light-load conditions. The device is optimized to deliver excellent performance even in noisy applications. It features an adjustable, fixed, or voltage tracking output voltage, an internal soft-start, and a frequency synchronization pin.Applications The MAX16976AEE/V+ is optimized for space-constrained mobile applications, where it can deliver higher output current than similarly sized competitive products. In particular, it is designed to meet the needs of the telecom, automotive, and consumer industries. The regulator is suitable for powering modern mission-critical applications such as 3G basestations, Avionics, Telematics, Automotive infotainment, and portable machine tools, as well as driving LCD displays, LEDs and other power-consuming peripherals in mobile designs. Working Principle The MAX16976AEE/V+ is designed to provide a PLH, or power-integrated, solution to manage power in battery-powered, system designs. It combines a 4 A buck regulator and integrated power FETs with a compact design to minimize board space. The features of this step-down regulator include a wide input voltage range of 4.5 V to 60 V, adjustable, fixed, or voltage-tracking output voltage of 0.9 V to VIN, 0.5% output voltage accuracy, 4 A continuous output current, and 4 MHz switching frequency. The IC also offers an internal soft-start, frequency synchronization pin, and enhanced transient response. The MAX16976AEE/V+ operates in synchronous buck mode with the top power MOSFETs connected in a synchronous rectifying configuration. The device transfers energy from the input side to the output side by automatically switching the power transistors in the MOSFETs, thus maintaining a stable output voltage in a very efficient manner. The switching frequency is controlled by a large external compensation capacitor connected across the error amplifier feedback loop to provide a stable output voltage over a wide range of output current. The external feedback resistor divider sets the output voltage of the regulator. The voltage across the output power stage continuously changes as the MOSFETs are switched on and off, generating an AC component that is filtered by the output capacitor and delivered to the load as a smooth DC voltage. The output voltage ripple is minimized with a low-noise switching system. The current-mode architecture allows for fast transient response and excellent loop stability. Furthermore, the high-side and low-side power MOSFETs are designed to allow for low-loss operation in the buck mode. This allows the regulator to achieve high efficiency across the entire input voltage and output current range.
